Quick answer: Lay the letters out on the floor, make a paper template, tape it level on the wall, then attach each letter with the mount your order was made for: adhesive, small pin nails or standoffs. Most names and short phrases take about 30–60 minutes. Our hanging guide has steps for each mount.
What you need
- A level (a long one or a laser level is easiest)
- Painter's tape and a pencil
- Kraft paper or wrapping paper for a template
- Mounting adhesive suited to your wall surface, or letters ordered with our 3M adhesive option
- A tape measure and a clean, dry cloth
Step by step
- Clean the wall. Wipe away dust so the adhesive grips. Freshly painted walls need to cure first; check your paint can for the cure time.
- Lay the letters out. Arrange them face-up on the floor and adjust spacing until it looks even. Optical spacing matters more than exact measurements.
- Make a template. Place paper over the layout and trace each letter. Mark a straight baseline under them.
- Tape the template up. Use the level to get the baseline straight, then tape the template to the wall.
- Attach each letter. Apply adhesive, line the letter up with its outline on the template, and press firmly for 30 seconds.
- Remove the template. Tear the paper away carefully around each letter, then let the adhesive set before touching the letters.
Tips for a professional result
- Center the phrase on the wall or above the furniture it belongs with, not on the room.
- For a logo sign with a backer panel, hang the panel first, then check it is level before the adhesive sets.
- Textured walls, brick and tile may need a different mounting method. Ask us before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Will the letters damage my wall?
Strong adhesive can pull paint when removed. If you rent or may move the sign, choose nail holes or standoffs (a $10 add-on per sign) instead. Our hanging guide explains each option.
Can I hang letters outdoors?
Our wood and acrylic letters are made for indoor use.
